How can I decrease my ping rate when playing games online?

Some web sites (including yahoo) also run irritatingly slow. My roommates have no problem with the same ISP connection. Your ping will increase in online games if you have a bad internet connection such as dial-up, or being on a very busy shared connection, such as a college dormitory connection.
